Nature & history

Nature with memories of another age

Görväln Nature Reserve stretches along the shore of Lake Mälaren from Hässelby to Kallhäll. Here, wooded hills, open pastures and water meet. The landscape bears traces both of nature's slow changes and of people's work over the centuries.

Where the waves once reached

On Hummelmoraberget there are beach ridges of rounded stones far above today's water level. They show where the shoreline once ran as the land rose from the sea. The waves washed away the finer material and left the heavier stones behind – a visible reminder of a landscape in change.

A thousand years of farming and grazing

People have farmed the fertile valleys for at least 1,000 years. Cattle and sheep grazed in the forests, where people also gathered firewood and timber. The open wooded pastures are part of this heritage. At Hummelmora, the older farmed landscape is still kept open by grazing.

Oaks that have stood for centuries

In the wooded pastures of Hummelmora stand oaks that are, in some cases, more than 400 years old. Pine grows on the thinner rocky ground, while spruce thrives in the richer soil of the valleys. Along the shore of Lake Mälaren there are aspen, birch and goat willow. Old and dead trees are preserved to provide habitats for insects, fungi, birds and bats.

Life between forest and water

The forest is home to species such as the great spotted woodpecker, green woodpecker and black woodpecker. Ospreys and white-tailed eagles can be seen over Lake Mälaren, and signs of beaver can be spotted along the shores. The seasons give the place different characters, from birdsong in spring to the colours of autumn.

Protected for the future

Görväln Nature Reserve was established in 1995 to preserve the valuable natural and cultural landscape and its importance for outdoor recreation. Conservation work includes keeping grasslands open and giving old oaks room to grow. In this way, both the area's history and the habitats of its plants and animals are preserved.
